TargetAmericaArchive.com details attempted attacks
on United States soil during World War II

Newspaper archive about obscure attacks debuts in conjunction with Lou Reda Productions' documentary on Discovery Military Channel

MAY 2006 - NewspaperARCHIVE.com, the largest newspaper database available online, has just released TargetAmericaArchive.com, a free newspaper archive that details the attacks attempted on US soil by Japan and Germany during World War II. The archive is being released in conjunction with Lou Reda Productions' one-hour documentary entitled Target America that is to be shown June 1 on the Discovery Military Channel.

The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 is remembered as a "date that will live in infamy." Yet, few people realize the Pearl Harbor air raid wasn't the only attempted attack made on US holdings during World War II. Through newspaper articles provided by NewspaperARCHIVE.com, along with other rare footage, photographs and interviews with eyewitnesses, the Target America documentary focuses on a lesser known part of World War II - the battle to keep the American homeland safe from attacks by Germany and Japan. From the Japanese efforts to ignite forest fires in Oregon to the teams of German saboteurs with orders to destroy power plants and manufacturing facilities on American soil, Japanese and German armed forces made repeated attempts to attack America directly. Fortunately for the United States, most of these attempts caused little more than inconvenience.

"The attacks made by the Axis powers during World War II have often been overlooked, in large part due to their lack of effectiveness," said Greg Hollingsworth, researcher for the archive. "Yet, it is interesting to learn about the Japanese army's last ditch attempt to use balloons to bomb the American northwest or the Germans' planned ground attacks."

Target America Archive features more than 50,000 historical newspapers that are searchable by key word or date. For example, if you were looking for more information on the artillery shelling of Fort Stevens in 1942, just type in "Fort Stevens" under the advanced search. Along with the archive, a timeline told through newspaper accounts and a short history gives more background information on the attempted attacks.

"TargetAmericaArchive.com is a great research resource that complements the Target America documentary," said Jeff Kiley, General Manager of NewspaperARCHIVE.com. "We're excited to be able to work with Lou Reda Productions and the Discovery Military Channel to provide rare newspaper articles that help tell the story of the attacks attempted during World War II."

TargetAmericaArchive.com is just one of the several free archives provided by NewspaperARCHIVE.com. Other archives include ThePearlHarborArchive.com, September11Archive.com, HolocaustArchive.com and FBIArchive.com. NewspaperARCHIVE.com is owned by Heritage Microfilm and began in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1999.

Lou Reda Productions of Easton, Pennsylvania, is one of the leading non-fiction filmmakers in the United States. In the thirty years since its founding, Lou Reda Productions has created more than 400 programs for cable and network television.
